What are the Types of Computer Network?

What is a Computer Network?

A computer network is a set of computers connected together for the purpose of sharing resources. The most common resource shared today is connection to the Internet. Other shared resources can include a printer or a file server. The Internet itself can be considered a computer network.

4 Types of Computer Network

PAN (Personal Area Network)

"portable"

-is a computer network used to interconnect devices centered on an individual workplace. It can be used for connecting personal devices, which typically involve a mobile computer, a cell phone, and/or a handheld computing device such as PDA. It generally covers a network range of less than 10m.

Advantages of Personal Area Network
  • No extra space requires
  • Connect to many devices at a time
  • Cost effective
  • Reliable
  • Secure
  • Used in office, conference, and meetings
  • Synchronize data between different devices
Disadvantages of Personal Area Network
  • Less distance range
  • Interfere with radio signals
  • Slow data transfer
  • Health problem
  • Costly in terms of communication devices
  • Infrared signals travel in a straight line

LAN (Local Area Network)

"room to room"
"building to building"

-is a type of network where two to as much as hundreds of computers are connected with each other using a network sharing device known as hub or switch to enable sharing of files, printers and other resources.

Ethernet- the most common type of LAN hardware.

Network Bridge- connects different local area networks together.

Advantages of Local Area Network
  • Resource Sharing
  • Software Applications Sharing
  • Easy and Cheap Communication
  • Centralized Data
  • Data Security
  • Internet Sharing
Disadvantages of Local Area Network
  • High Setup Cost
  • Privacy Violations
  • Data Security Threat
  • LAN Maintenance Job
  • Covers Limited Area

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

"town to town"
"city to city"

-is a larger network than a LAN. It involves connecting several networks together that reside within a city, town, or metropolis. On a MAN, users may be several miles apart, but resources appear on the network as if they were located within the same building.

Advantages of Metropolitan Area Network
  • It utilizes drawbacks of both LAN and WAN to provide larger and controllable computer network.
  • MAN requires fewer resources compare to WAN. This saves the implementation cost.
  • It helps people interface fast LANs together. This is due to easy implementation of links.
  • It provides higher security compare to WAN.
  • It helps in cost effective sharing of common resources such as printers etc.
  • Like LAN and WAN, it also offers centralized management of data and files.
Disadvantages of Metropolitan Area Network
  • It is difficult to manage the network once it becomes large.
  • It is difficult to make the system secure from hackers and industrial espionage.
  • Network installation requires skilled technicians and network administrators. This increases overall installation and management costs.
  • It requires more cables for connection from one place to the other compare to LAN.

WAN (Wide Area Network)

"country to country"

-is simply a network consisting of interconnected LANs over a wide area reaching across continents. Setting it up involves the addition of a specialized network bridge called a router.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)- a method of securing point-to-point data communications between your network and another remote network or computer.

Advantages of Wide Area Network
  • Centralizes IT infrastructure
  • Boosts your privacy
  • Increases bandwidth
  • Eliminates Need for ISDN
  • Guaranteed uptime
  • Cuts costs, increase profits
Disadvantages of Wide Area Network
  • High setup costs
  • Security Concerns
  • Maintenance Issues
